Congratulations went out to Montini Catholic senior Ian Kwit for being named Bronco Artist of the Month for May. Ian was selected for the honor by art teacher and Fine Arts Department Chair, Ms. Stephanie Kuecker. "Ian has shown a great improvement in drawing skills this year," said Ms. Kuecker upon her announcement. "He had had a major work load this semester and he did an excellent job multitasking in school. I really enjoy watching Ian come in to class and unwind for the day. He gets so absorbed in his creations that he usually stays after class and works until the very moment he starts Track practice."
The announcement came as a surprise to Ian. "This was a huge shock to me!" he said.
"Although I love to draw in my spare time, I was fairly new to the art scene when (Ms. Kuecker) told me I was May's Artist of the Month."
Ian likes to keep it simple - with his favorite mediums being pencil and water color. He especially loves creating portraits and is currently working on improving on his technique. "I enjoyed art and drawing a lot when I was younger but never really had that creative spark," he said. "I saw that creative side of me begin to really emerge in high school and I wanted to see it grow and develop more." Ms. Kuecker is very impressed with Ian's progress since beginning her class. "He has been refining his drawing skills and has greatly improved on proportions!"
Ian credits his art teacher for helping his find his talents as an artist. "Ms. Kuecker is a huge inspiration to me. She encourages kids to follow their dreams and passions, which I am all about! Her persistence and creativity show in her job as she is always thinking of unique and varying ways to tackle certain problems. Throughout the class, her insight into my art pieces was invaluable as I was so new to design. Her light spirit and kind attitude made every day a fun one, and I will always miss the atmosphere of her classroom."
Apparently, talent runs in the Kwit household. Ian says that his sister, Shannon, can also be considered 'an artist'. "She and I like to draw together from time to time, and we both share a profound appreciation for all things artistic." His mother, Dina, is a professional photographer and teaches these skills in her Photography I and II Classes at Montini Catholic.
Upon review of Ian's highly impressive academic accomplishments as a Montini student, it's hard to believe he even has time for art. He is an Illinois State Scholar, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor and was most recently celebrated as a Montini Academic All Star. He also received the Gold Medal Award for Chinese and the Silver Medal Award for Community Service (awarded at Montini Catholic Founder's Day on May 17th). In addition, he received the President's Award for Academic Excellence and is a member of Montini's National Honor Society, where he also served as a Peer Tutor. He was member of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society) and achieved Academic All Conference in two sports (Cross Country and Track).
Ian has plans to carry his passion for art into his college career and beyond. He will be majoring in Marine Biology and Mandarin at Boston University in the fall. Parents, John and Dina Kwit are very proud.
"The ability to express your feelings and emotions through art is an excellent experience," said Ian. "Watching my artistic abilities and thought process grow (at Montini) was incredible. As an artist, you never stop growing, improving your technique, or learning from previous mistakes."
