Olivia Herrmann and Marissa VanDeVeer Receive the Mother Teresa Campus Ministry Award
Seniors, Olivia Herrmann and Marissa VanDeVeer, each dutifully earned the Mother Teresa Campus Ministry Award for 2019. The award recognizes graduating seniors who stand out as examples in community service and leadership throughout their high school years.
Olivia, a graduate of Sacred Heart School in Lombard, was a vital member of Montini's newly created Peer Ministry Team which is a faith-based ministry made up of student leaders. Their sole mission is to inspire and motivate by example and to encourage other students to engage in faith-based activities at the school and in their communities. During her senior year, Olivia was also President of Montini's Lasallian Youth, a Student Ambassador, representing Montini to prospective Broncos, as well as a Service and Co-Tutoring Chair of the St. Pope Paul VI Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Academically, she was Vice President of Spanish Club, Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta, and a member of Montini's Math Team. Lastly, Olivia was Class Valedictorian.
Upon being named an NHS Service and Co-Tutoring Chair at the beginning of her senior year, Olivia expressed her goals. " I hope that NHS will play a more prevalent role within our school environment. Specifically in my position, I want to encourage more students to seek academic help in order to reach their full potential. I think giving NHS members the chance to tutor their peers will help them grow in leadership by stepping in someone else's shoes-trying to figure out the best way to help them understand. I also want to give students a greater opportunity to serve their community, not just for service hours, but more for people in need."
Marissa was also a member of Montini's Peer Ministry team. She is a graduate of St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School in Lemont. "I joined to bring a stronger faith life to Montini," she said, upon being selected for the team. "I want this school community to be one where everyone can openly celebrate God's love and appreciation towards Him."
During her senior year Marissa was the Treasurer of Montini's Lasallian Youth Group, President of Montini's Pro-Life Club, and a member of their Future Saints Club. She also served as a Kairos (senior retreat) leader. Academically she was President of the Math Team, President of Mu Alpha Theta (math honors society), Vice President of the National Honors Society, PR/Advertising Manager of Spanish Club and a member of the Spanish Honor Society. Marissa also found the time to work with Montini's Student Government team - on student activities and events. Marissa was Co-Salutatorian of the Class of 2019. "My overall experience at Montini has inspired me. My teachers have encouraged me to take on various leadership roles, which have allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone. This school has become my family, and faith is an aspect just as important."
"We are very proud of both Marissa and Olivia," said Montini Catholic President, Jim Segredo. "Each year we are always amazed at the accomplishments of our graduates and their dedication to living our their faith. Congratulations to them both."
The young ladies were presented with their awards during Montini Catholic's Founder's Day ceremony on Friday, May 17th.
