Students In MN for Habitat for Humanity

From June 8th – June 12th, ten Montini Catholic High School students traveled to Winona County Minnesota to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. During the week, they constructed the walls of the entire inside of a house. “It was a learning experience for all the students, as well as the teachers who chaperoned the trip,” commented Montini Catholic’s Campus Minister and Theology Teacher, Mr. Michael Blanchette.
The house they were working on was being built for a single mother with three children. Habitat requires the home owners also volunteer their time to help build the house. “It was heartwarming to work with Christine (the mother whose house they were building). The students experienced first-hand the difference they were making in the life of this single mom and her children. The group of students enjoyed each other’s company each evening,” shared Blanchette.

Rugby Club Takes 2nd in State

The Montini Catholic High School Boys’ Rugby Team took 2nd Place in the Tier 2 at the 2009 Memorial Day State Rugby Championship Game. “This was our fifth year in existence, and the second time we have played for the State championship in 4 years. We were in the toughest four team division this year. Three of those teams finished 1st, 2nd and 4th Place in State,” commented Coach Bill Mullins.
The Broncos had a very successful season with only two losses prior to the State Championship. The Montini Catholic Broncos had one win and one loss to the Waubonsie Valley Team, going into the State Competition. It was a rivalry State match in which both the teams played their hearts out. “We knew each others’ games going in. They hit hard, and they’re fast,” said Montini Coach Bill Mullins. “We played each other even for sixty-seven minutes of the game, and then things didn’t bounce our way. One bounce here or there and it’s a different game.”
Coach Mullins stated that they are the smallest school in their division, and quite possibly in northern Illinois. “Our guys never come off the field, and that’s a hard thing to prepare for. That’s who wins in this game – the guys willing to look a little deeper, willing to say ‘I’ll give one more effort,” stated Coach Mullins after the State Championship game.
